Roofing for Fort Mitchell's older and historic homes

Fort Mitchell is a Kenton County city named for the Civil War earthwork Fort Mitchel, built in 1861 and named for Union General Ormsby M. Mitchel. The town grew up along the old Lexington Pike, today's Dixie Highway, and was incorporated in 1909. Many of its homes are early 20th-century houses in Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, and Craftsman styles, and several areas are documented in a National Register of Historic Places survey of Fort Mitchell's historic resources.

Roofs on homes like these need more care than a simple ranch roof:

  • Steep, cut-up rooflines. Gables, dormers, and valleys mean more places where water collects and more flashing details that have to be done right.
  • Roof-to-wall connections. On Tudor homes, the roof often runs into stucco and half-timbered walls. That joint needs careful step and wall flashing, or water gets behind the stucco.
  • Old decking. After decades and sometimes several layers of shingles, some roof boards are soft or damaged. We check the deck after tear-off and replace only the rotted or damaged boards instead of covering them up.
  • Mature trees. Fort Mitchell's tree-lined streets drop leaves into valleys and gutters, and shade lets algae streaks grow on north-facing slopes.

Add Northern Kentucky's freeze-thaw winters and spring and summer thunderstorms, and small leaks can grow quickly. If you see curled or missing shingles, granules in the gutters, dark streaks, or stains on an upstairs ceiling, schedule an inspection.

Roofing services in Fort Mitchell, KY

  • Roof replacement: full tear-off down to the deck, decking repair where needed, new underlayment, and new architectural shingles.
  • Roof repair: leaks, wind-damaged or missing shingles, flashing at walls and chimneys, pipe boots, and valley problems.
  • Flat and commercial roofing: repairs and replacements for low-slope roofs on businesses along Dixie Highway and on porches and additions at homes.
  • Roof cleaning: soft washing that removes algae streaks and moss without damaging the shingles.

Gutters in Fort Mitchell, KY

Fort Mitchell's mature trees fill gutters fast, and clogged or sagging gutters send water over the fascia and down along the foundation. Fortress Solutions installs new gutters, including seamless gutters, and repairs existing ones for Fort Mitchell homes. We can handle gutters along with a roof replacement, so the drip edge, gutter apron, and gutters all work together, or as a separate job. Ask for a free gutter estimate at /schedule or call (859) 328-6338.

This recent job was a full roof replacement on a Tudor-style home with white stucco, dark half-timbering, and brick walls.

  1. Protecting the property. Before tear-off, the crew hung black debris netting from the roof edge down over the shrubs and plantings, so falling shingles and nails landed in the netting instead of the landscaping.
  2. Tear-off and deck repair. The old roof was stripped to the boards and the crew checked the whole deck. Four pieces of roof decking had rotted, so the crew cut them out and replaced them with new OSB. The rest of the deck was sound and stayed in place. The photos show the open sections, with attic insulation visible, before the new boards went in.
  3. Ice and water barrier and underlayment. IKO Ice & Water Rhino ice and water barrier went along the eaves and in the valleys, the areas most likely to leak from ice dams and heavy runoff. CertainTeed RoofRunner synthetic underlayment covered the rest of the deck.
  4. Edges, valleys, and flashing. New brown drip edge and gutter apron went along the roof edges. The valleys got W-style 26-gauge metal valleys in Terra Bronze. Brown step flashing went in where the roof meets the stucco walls, and every pipe got new pipe flashing.
  5. New shingles, ridge vent, and ridge caps. The crew started with CertainTeed starter shingles and installed CertainTeed Landmark PRO architectural shingles in Prairie Wood. A PVC roll ridge vent went along the ridge, capped with matching CertainTeed ridge shingles. Exposed nail heads and flashing details were sealed with Solar Seal caulk.

Roofing FAQs for Fort Mitchell, KY

Can you replace the roof on an older or historic Fort Mitchell home?

Yes. Older homes often have steep gables, valleys, and roofs that meet stucco or brick walls. We tear off to the deck, replace damaged boards, and flash every wall and valley joint. On our recent Fort Mitchell Tudor job, we replaced four rotted deck boards and installed new step flashing where the roof meets the stucco walls.

How do I know if I need a roof repair or a full replacement?

Isolated problems such as a few missing shingles, a failed pipe boot, or a flashing leak can usually be repaired. Widespread curling, heavy granule loss, many leak points, or a soft deck usually mean replacement is the better value. We'll show you photos from the inspection.

Very professional and answered all our questions. Sales man kept us up to date throughout the process & even messaged pictures of the work in progress.  They sent a double crew as our job was very large. They worked until dark & came back the next morning. They left the property spotless. We are very pleased. Highly recommended!
